PLYMOUTH – Belmont M. Knight, 78, died November 10, 2000 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born January 29, 1922 at Benton the son of Chester and Doris (Craig) Knight. He graduated from Lawrence High School, Class of 1939, and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. On November 12, 1941 he married Geraldine E. Vigue. For 22 years, Belmont managed creameries for United Farmers of New England in Albion and Detroit. He later co-owned with his cousin 4 Quik-Shop convenience stores. He will be remembered for his tireless work on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America for over 35 years. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Barrows-Skidgel Post # 105 American Legion in Newport, where he served as finance officer for many years. He was very active in Plymouth town affairs, including the positions of 1st and 2nd selectman, town cemetery sexton, plumbing inspector, code enforcement officer, and was actively involved in updating the Plymouth Fire Department. He was proud to have Plymouth’s newest fire engine named in his honor. He will be remembered as an avid hunter, camper, canoeist, and fisherman.

In addition to his wife of Plymouth, he is survived by 2 sons, Richard of Farmington and Todd of Tampa, Florida; 2 daughters, Joyce Dudley of Newport, and Janice Bubar of Durham, NC; 1 brother Sheldon Knight of Albion; 5 sisters, Frances Howard of Lakeland, FL, Daphyne Creel of Kent, WA, Helen MacNeill of Chelmsford, MA, Beatrice Sproul of Augusta, and Sandra Kennedy of E. Mansfield, MA; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.

Friends may call 2-4 P.M. Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 64 Main Street, Newport. A graveside committal service will be held 2 P.M. Monday, November 13th, at the family lot, Sawyer Cemetery, Plymouth, with the Rev. Robert Emrich, Pastor of Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, c/o Mrs. Lee Whitaker, Treasurer, P.O. Box 46, Plymouth, ME 04969.
