Ethel Gloria (Mattson) Leighton
GUILFORD- Ethel Gloria (Mattson) Leighton went to be with her Lord on November 9, 2012 at the age of 81.

Born in Sangerville, Maine on July 29, 1931, Gloria grew up in Monson, Maine and graduated Valedictorian of her class at Monson Academy.

Gloria’s hard work at several jobs led to her position as manager of the A & P in Dover-Foxcroft where she retired at age 60. She was also a Stanley Home Products Affiliate for over 30 years.

Gloria’s joys in life were her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and her family and friends. She enjoyed doing for others, being a humble servant leader and a peacemaker who was devoted to loving people and meeting their needs in practical ways. She was grateful to all who cared for her when she needed it most.

Gloria was actively involved in the leadership of the Guilford United Methodist Church and the Mayo Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered for 12 years at Mayo Regional Hospital plus served at Meals for ME as well as being a member and past president of Guilford United Methodist Women and the Abaris Club. She served on boards of the Eastern Area Agency on Aging and was actively involved with RSVP. Over the years Gloria initiated “Soup Night” and the fund for Camp Mechuwana among many other local service projects.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clifford Leighton Jr. of Guilford, daughter Vicki Corrington and her husband Ben of Camden, son Bob Leighton and his wife Marilyn of Buchanan, GA , son Dale Leighton and his wife Diana of Union, brother Adolph Mattson and his wife Rita of Milo, sister Hazel Richards and her husband Roger of Shirley, sister Helen Lunt and her husband John of Warren, sister Betty Stone and her husband Mickey of Monson and many other nieces, nephews, family members and friends who are dear to her heart.

Gloria was predeceased by her mother Eleanor Blethen Mattson Degerstrom, and father Gunnard Mattson, stepfather Ernest Degerstrom, her brother Phillip Mattson, and her sister Peggy Weckhorst.

Friends may call Friday, November 16, 2012, from 2 to 4, and 6 to 8 PM, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak Street in Guilford. Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, November 17, 2012, at the Guilford United Methodist Church, with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Guilford United Methodist Church P.O. Box 267, Guilford, ME 04443, for renovation of the fellowship hall in memory of Gloria Leighton.
