He was born September 4, 1942, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Harold and Maude-Doris (Rollins) Rees. The eldest of 5 siblings, Gene was a go getter from the start. He took a paper route from 35 subscriptions to 125, and continued to expand the route, an entrepreneur at age 7.

He was especially proud to have been a member of the elite Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Society. He later enrolled at the University of Maine Law School in Portland, where he lived with the Dean, Edward S. Godfrey.

It was in Portland where Gene met a red-haired, feisty, beautiful young woman, named Eleanor Ann Woodcock. After a lengthy courtship, they were married in 1968.

As an adult, Gene served in several capacities, including school teacher, vice principal, and construction. He also owned Guilford Dry Cleaners, and his own apartment complex, as well as his lawn service.
