FREDERICK W. COATES
NEWPORT—Frederick W. Coates, Jr., 61, died April 14, 2009 at a Bangor hospital. He was born September 22, 1947 in New Haven, CT a son of Frederick and Shirley (Gell) Coates, Sr. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Bill served in the Branford, CT police department for a number of years, and, after moving to Maine in 1977, was a police officer for the Town of Newport, later serving as Police Chief. He was a Mason, as well as a former member and Deacon of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport.

In addition to his mother of Branford, CT; he is survived by his wife, Cindy (Hand) Coates of Newport; 2 sons, Derick and his wife Sarah, and Shawn; 5 daughters, Tammy and husband David Pacileo, Heather and husband Scott Elderkin, Ashley and husband Justin Metivier, Chelsea Coates and fiancé Peter Chase, and Sarah Coates; 2 brothers, David and wife Winifred, and Thomas; and a sister, Barbara and husband John Hinckley; 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Cancer Care of Maine for all of their help during Bill’s illness.

A memorial service will be held 2 P.M. Thursday, April 23rd at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Newport.

Memorial donations may be made to the Newport Memorial VFW Post 11191, 123 Main Street, Newport, ME 04953, to help with establishing the Veterans Memorial Park.
