NEWPORT - George C. Mathies, 64, died March 20, 2001 at his Stetson Road residence following a long illness. He was born March 5, 1937 at Greenwich, CT the son of George and Helen (Whittmer) Mathies. He spent the majority of his youth in Greenwich and Port Chester, NY. He graduated from Greenwich High School, where he played football, and began his pursuit of art and carpentry, two of his loves. He served in the U. S. Army. On January 18, 1969 he married Aliene Kempton. They moved to Stamford, CT where they raised their seven children. In 1980, they moved to Newport, Maine. George was a devout Catholic, and a dedicated and loving father. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield. Through the years, he was employed by Palmer Electric and Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT. Later, he spent several years with AC Electric in Bangor and General Electric in Pittsfield. He will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

He was predeceased by his wife, Aliene, September 1, 1997. He is survived by his children; Christine Mathies of Pittsfield and her children, Craig, Christopher, Kara and Kyle; Barbara Boyd of Caswell; Eric Mathies and his wife, Victoria of Standish and their children, Erica and Drew; Susan Mathies of Monrovia, CA; Kurt Mathies and his wife, Julia of Hampden and their son, Cameron; Alex Mathies of Burlington, VT and his fiancé, Elizabeth Steward; and Karl Mathies of Newport; a sister, Rose Suber of Wewahitchka, FL ; a sister-in-law, Barbara Santasieri of Yonkers, NY; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call 7 to 9 P.M. Friday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 A.M. Saturday, March 24th at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Pittsfield with the Reverend C. James Martel officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to St. Agnes School, P. O. Box 369, Pittsfield, ME 04967, or Sebasticook Valley Hospital, 99 Grove Hill, Pittsfield, ME 04967 or Childrens’ Medical Center, 12 Charter Oak Place, Hartford, CT 06106.
