Marietta (Lowe) Fletcher
PITTSFIELD – Marietta Fletcher, 93, died April 5, 2012 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility. She was born June 18, 1918 in Skowhegan, a daughter of Everett and Ellen (McGee) Lowe. Marietta was a day student at Good Will Hinckley, graduating in 1936. She graduated from Farmington State Normal School in 1939 and attended the University of Maine at Orono. Marietta married Earl Fletcher in 1953.

She taught at schools in North Waterford, Winslow, and Glens Falls, NY. She also taught college as a critic teacher at the Mallett Training School in Farmington, and retired from the Pittsfield public school system in 1994, when she became a substitute teacher for a number of years. Marietta always enjoyed people. She will be remembered for her decorations and entertaining couples and friends at her home for cards and table games.

Marietta was active in community service. She served as organist and substitute in churches in Pittsfield, Newport, Clinton, Madison, Waterville and Fairfield, and numerous Eastern Star functions. She also held active positions in the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Auxiliary and managed the hospital gift shop for many years. Marietta was Grand Marshall of the Egg Festival in 1993, served as co-chair with Al Worden in 1995 and 1996 for the annual hospital community appeal, and served as chairperson in 1997 and 1998. She was a member of the Women’s Legislative Council in Augusta, and the Pittsfield Federated Tuesday Club.

Among her many awards, Marietta received the 1986 Jefferson Award, the 1994 Rose Medallion from the General Grand Chapter of the OES, the Unsung Hero Award from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1997, and the Senior Star Award from Merrill Merchants Bank in 1999. Marietta was honored at a “This Is Your Life” presentation of the American Association of University Women at Colby College.

Marietta is survived by two nieces and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Earl in 1979, and by a baby daughter at birth.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, April 12th, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield with the Rev. William Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 10 A.M. until the time of services. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Fairfield, later in the spring. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.
