SUSAN DOUGLASS BROWN BLATCHFORD
MONSON - Susan Douglass Brown Blatchford, died unexpectedly March 26, 2002, at the age of 71. She was born Oct. 2, 1930, in New York City, N.Y., the daughter of the late S. Howell Brown Jr. and Dorothy Robert Brown. Susan grew up in Summit, N.J. and Mamaroneck, N.Y., and was a graduate of Greenwich Academy, Endicott Junior College, the University of Maine at Orono, and Simmons College Graduate School of Library Science. Susan had a keen intellect with wide-ranging interests, including vintage photography and her beloved home in Monson. For many years, she was both friend and caregiver as well as artistic executrix to Bernice Abbott, the esteemed photographer, who died in 1991.

She is survived by four daughters, Alicia (Kindy) W. Blatchford of Wellesley, Mass., Sarah (Sally) B. Ijams and husband, John H. (Jack) Ijams of Southport, Conn., Lucy B. Dillon and husband, Brian D. Dillon of Medfield, Mass. and Ellen B. McDermott and husband, David B. McDermott, M.D., of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister, Sarah B. Blatchford and husband, Peter Blatchford of South Dartmouth, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Katharine Seton Ijams, Phoebe Lord Blatchford Ijams, Caroline Clark Moore, Edward Vincent Dillon, Susan Douglass Dillon, Amelia Lou McDermott and Lucy Elizabeth McDermott; six nieces and nephews. Two marriages to John Blatchford of Orrington ended in divorce.

Memorial services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Monson Volunteer Fire Department, Monson 04464, are welcome. Arrangements in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.
