WILLIAM M. DOWNING
MILO - Dr. William M. Downing, 94, husband of Janice M. (Mulkern) Downing, died Dec. 12, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born Sept. 2, 1907, in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of William H. and Madge (Stoddard) Downing.He served as a captain with the U.S. Army, and was part of the invasion force landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dartmouth Medical College, and Boston University School of Medicine, he was a physician and surgeon at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, and then practiced from 1949-1984 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass. He continued practicing medicine until his retirement at age 88. He was a fellow with the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of Milo; his first wife, Evelyn K. Downing of Taunton, Mass.; four sons, Jeff Downing of Boring, Ore., Greg Downing of Corvallis, Ore., Michael Lindquist of Milo, Mark Lindquist of Mansfield, Mass.; four daughters, Jill Downing of Wellesley, Mass., Lee McBride of Taunton, Mass., Jeanne Murphy of Milo, Julie Leroux of Portlad, Conn.; 16 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, D. Gorton Downing in 1984.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Massachusetts. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Milo.
