NEWPORT - Willis A. Getchell, I, 93, a lifelong resident of Newport, died December 17, 2001 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility. He was born May 31, 1908 at Newport, the son of Arthur and Mary Jane (Higgins) Getchell. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1926. He was employed for 32 years by the Maine Water Company as superintendent of the Newport water utility, retiring in 1968. He was an honorary retired chief of the Newport Fire Department, having retired from active duty in 1968. He was also a state fire warden for a number of years. He was a member of Meridian Splendor Lodge #49, AF & AM of Newport, where he served as Master in 1939. He also served as Lodge Secretary for a number of years. He was a former member of the St. John Commandery and Anah Temple Shrine, both of Bangor.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lana-May (Springer) Getchell, who died in 1988 and by their son, Willis A. Getchell, II in 1976. He is survived by a grandson, Willis A. Getchell, III of Phoenix, AZ and a beloved daughter-in-law, Sophie P. Myers of Atlantic City, NJ.

Masonic funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Friday, December 21st, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, with the officers of Meridian Splendor Lodge officiating. Friends may call from 6 P.M. until the time of the services. Burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
