Beautifully drawn characters, a multitude of various kinds of relationships between family members, work partners, friends, etc, and a lively and interesting plot make a very good read, indeed.
This novel contains tragedy, certainly, but that's not all it contains. There is the tragedy of a hopeless semi-life, a lost child, a broken family, a lost love, all woven together intelligently and with great care.
The protagonist, Detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler, was introduced in her previous novel mentioned above, and it is my belief and hope that her next novel will include him, also.
Aside from all the obviously outstanding writing, I especially was pleased to discover that Ms. Hill has once again managed to wrap her novel in a cloak of reality by allowing it to end not at all "happily ever after". Instead, she has chosen to let the minor problems solve themselves as they naturally would, and let the major one remain unresolved. Good for her.
