Juan comments on the news
Human Race

When asked about our race, answering "Human Race" might be best. Recent studies of the human DNA show cultural concepts of “race” to have no scientific counterpart. That is, human beings with varying skin pigments and other superficial characteristics are not separable into species as are birds or ants or bears.

Modern realities of transportation and commerce are creating one world. If we do it right, including everyone, excluding no one, it can be a peaceful world. Peace on earth, goodwill to all people everywhere, is a goal attainable.

How can we justify ourselves if we fail to try?

Thank you, Judy, for providing a CRAFT FAIR listing in your Daily ME Classifieds. It's catching on!

May I take this opportunity to invite people everywhere to attend their local Craft Fairs. What an opportunity they provide for you to meet your neighbors, support local talent, find GREAT gifts (and often good food), build your community, AND...KEEP MONEY FLOWING IN YOUR COMMUNITY. Craft Fairs are FUN! When you give a handmade gift, it's often such a hit that people will remember you for it year after year. You'll remember it, too, and that feels GOOD! When you really care...shop at the craft fair. Coming soon: Nokomis High School in Newport on 10/21; SeDoMoCha Middle School on 11/18; and Three Rivers Ambulance Craft Fair @ Penquis Valley High School in Milo on Sun., 11/26--plus more. See you there! Check out the whole list on The Daily Me classifieds. There is something for everyone at the craft fair.

Hello Maine! One of my absolutely american favourites is Henry David Thoreau and I read e i Walden many, many times, and his other works. As it was hard to find all his works here in Sweden,I search the web and found it there. So some years ago I read Thoreau's Maine Woods and I just fell in love with Maine: you remembers me a little about my home-province Jemtland here in Sweden where I was born.
I searched the map as I wanted to know more about the state and the area. I saw that there are places like Jemtland, Stockholm and New Sweden in Maine and understand there are swedish descentants even from my home-province!
Hi to all of you! You are welcome to drop me a line.
This site was really something extra!

Judy, I love your "paper." It sort of makes me feel like I really know what's happening locally and around Maine now. Keep up the great work and thanks for all your community support and for providing a place to list CRAFT FAIRS. I hope our visitors learn what a great tool The Daily Me is!I read about the motor coach convention (where else but here?). I saw LOTS of motor coaches and lots of motor coaches and lots of motor coaches from Dover-Foxcroft to Kittery last weekend. I saw one in "Dover" that, in French words on its side said "Let the Good Times Roll!" I wonder what kind of impact the migration of these 6000 motor coaches to Brunswick, Maine, really has made on Maine's economy and Maine's people (and visitors). I do have major concern for professional truckers who need to rest in the rest areas. If there is no room to park, what do they do? This is a VERY SERIOUS matter. Are places reserved for them? Yes, coach drivers need to rest, too.I would like to receive letters from people in Maine who have been in any way affected by this "biggest ever" convention. What were your experiences in having these dinosaur-sized visitors? Who made money? Did the motor coach tourists buy a lot of Maine products? (I know they bought a lot of diesel fuel!) What else did they buy? If any motor coach owners read this, I welcome your comments, too. Did you enjoy the convention? How was the migration and where did you come from? Did you feel welcomed? What impressed you favorably and unfavorably about coming to Maine. Would you come back? What did you buy? Did you pass up a lot of shopping opportunities because there was too narrow an entrance or no place to park or no handy place to turn around? Did you have any problems? How can you afford these things? Are they fun? What's it like to drive one? Do you all do your own driving? Do you have a staff? How many people does the average motor coach generally house? If you come to Piscataquis County (the HEART of Maine), look around. You are now in the least populated county east of the Mississippi River. Really! We have five people per square mile. If you have any questions or need any information, drop a line.

I hope this monstrous convention has a positive impact, economically and otherwise, but I think people haven't learned how to make traffic jams fun yet. They could turn off their motors and start picnicing or dancing on the turnpike, but they don't. Maybe it's against the law.I find this whole phenomenon very fascinating as a big picture and I do hope to hear from all types of people with all sorts of stories to tell.
Sincerely,
Doris Desclos

Judy, I thank you for your interesting newspaper. I love your pictures! Thank you for speaking at the business incubator. We all learned a lot! More, please.
Perhaps Mainers could use this guest book as a forum for keeping informed on vital issues...such as, who has the lowest-priced gasoline. I'll go first: On Wednesday, 2/16/00, I found regular gas for $1.349 at The Maine Store on Main Street, Detroit, Maine. Surely beats the $1.429 in Dover-Foxcroft! Good food, good coffee, and friendly service, too!
Does anyone want to jump on the bandwagon and help identify more sources of lower-priced gasoline? Maybe this could turn into a special Daily Me Forum? I believe consumers can drive the price DOWN! Let's DO IT! Let's support the businesses that give us a break. Buy all you can from the ones that lower the price of gas. Newspaper? Soda? Milk? Eggs? We need to keep the owner-operated businesses alive. Just look at the difference in the cost of gas and you can see the reason.

Woops... . Forgot the comments section on the first attempt. It is a rainy (yet somehow still sunny) morning here in San Diego. Merle Willard and I attended the same New Years Eve party, and I just want to say that, "That boy really had a good time---definitely a member of the varsity squad... ." How long will it be before Merle "finds out" about this entry, and gives me some kind of "feedback". This is so much fun to be able to do---who'd a thunk it 20 years ago?! Would love to hear from anyone. Hope everyone is keeping warm and dry.

Hi everyone....I can't wait to get back "home" in Dexter. The new Millside Pharmacy will be opening February 1st, if all goes as planned. Everyone has been so receptive of the new pharmacy in Dexter. The Woodmans are very community-oriented people and I know the community will welcome them and the pharmacy with open arms. I am looking forward to seeing everyone! Please stop by, even if just to say hello. Also, if you want to keep up on the removal of the mill in Corinna, check out the web site, for some great photos that my husband and his dad have taken. My husband has climbed the tower at the Town Hall in Corinna to get some of the photos. Check it out. See you in February......Julie

Hello and "Happy Year 2000" to everyone in Dexter! I always enjoy visiting this webpage...I feel that I'm visiting friends, albeit longdistance! My parents have moved away from Dexter, but I'll always consider Dexter to be my hometown! I'd love to hear from members of the DRHS class of '82 (or other DRHS graduates). Our 20th year class reunion will be here before we know it.....does anyone know what plans are being made? Let me know.....I'd hate to miss it! Great job on the website, Judy :-)
