Great Story!
printed in the Fort Knox Newspaper "the Turret"
> Local patriotism touches hearts
>
> My wife was returning to the Fort Knox area from Camp Atterbury, Ind.,
>Oct.14. As an Army nurse, she had been providing medical support for
>personnel
> parachuting from helicopters. She stopped at a Cracker Barrel
>(restaurant)
> near Seymour. After the meal, the waitress brought out the check, put
>it
>on the table, and then placed cash on top of it. She told my wife that
>the
> Cracker Barrel would like to pay for her meal because she was in
>military
> uniform. Upon taking the money to the counter to pay, my wife asked to
>see
> the manager. She wanted to express her gratitude for the store having
>such
>a policy in place. She immediately realized, from the expression on the
> manager's face, that it wasn't a policy. The waitress had paid for my
>wife's meal.
>I am a drill sergeant. I don't have a very soft heart, but I have a
> weakness-patriotism. What that waitress displayed was pure America.
>When
>my wife told me about it, I had to fight off tears. That girl probably
>used money that she earned from tips.
>This is why I serve my country. This is why
> I would die for my country. That one incredible act will do more for
>that
> Cracker Barrel's business than any amount of money that it spent on
> advertising in 2001.
>
> I am a man of action, and intend to tell everyone I know this story
> and will probably write a few letters to editors of newspapers. May
>God
> bless our country, our soldiers, our families, and may God bless the
>heart
> of gold within that one waitress.

Hello Dexter, Today is the celebration of my father John's retirement on Christmas Eve.
Many of you in town may think that someone new has moved in with mom, don't worry that's just Dad.
I know that folks are not used to seeing him around town too much but he does belong there.
Please if you see Dad in town congratulate him on over 30 years of very hard work and long hours with United Parcel Service.
People retire every day, I know, but my Dad's retirement is different. See he spent all these years commuting to Bangor
and then driving his UPS truck to Mt. Desert Island to spend 8-10 hours serving his customers.
By the time you figure all the commuting time, work time, and the bad weather that can hit anytime
in Maine you'll see that Dad had very few hours of rest at night. He also raised two less than
easy boys and maintained a Christian influence for Bob and me. As I've grown older I've
begun to see the sacrifices that a good father will make for those who mean the world to
him. Thanks for your love, work and example to me, Dad. In the past 8 years you've
also become quite the Grampie. Caleb and Lauren send you their love. It breaks my heart that Kendra, the kids and I
could not make it today Dad. Please know we are proud of you and look forward to seeing you in January and
all the other times you pass thru PA in your travels. Happy Retirement and God Bless.

Hi Judy......I just wanted to say "hi" to my hometown. Hope everyone is doing well and recovering from the shock of the past few weeks (although we probably will never truly recover from such horrors). Let's remember to pray for the victim's families, and especially for the children who have lost moms or dads. May God bring them comfort now and in the years to come. Also, let's not forget President Bush...he truly needs our prayers just now. Judy, I have to tell you that this website is, by far, one of the best on the internet! You do an excellent job, and Dexter can be proud that it is so beautifully represented on the World Wide Web! May God bless you all, and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Hi All,
I was surprised to see so many (well, two) Norsworthy/s! I'm not from Maine (shame on me, I guess) and I've never been there but I'd like to visit one day. I hear it's truly a beautiful state (especially at this time of the year).
I do think, however, y'all (See?? I'm a Southerner!) have given whoever or whatever the state hater is way too much attention (which is what folks of that ilk thrive on). I would like to point out, though, that it isn't illegal for one person to edit another person's comments (in the United States, at least) or even to squelch free speech entirely. Our government can't do it but we, as citizens, have every right to edit, delete, redact or refuse to post comments that offend us, irritate us, or for no reason at all.
Great website, by the way!

Dear Osama Bin Laden, Yasser Arafat, and Sadam Hussein, et. al.,
We are pleased to announce that we unequivocally accept your challenge
to an old-fashioned game of whoop-ass. Now that we understand the rule
that there are no rules, we look forward to playing by them for the
first time.
Since this game is a winner-take-all, we unfortunately are unable to
invite you to join us at the victory celebration. But rest
assured that we will toast you -- LITERALLY.
While we will admit that you are off to an impressive lead, it is
however now our turn at the plate.
By the way, we will be playing on your court now.
Batter up.
Sincerely,

Our lives may have been hurt but the US shall never fall and we will win this war that a faceless coward began. The US will stand proud and tall and will never forget this day September 11,2001.

I wont say this is a great day as everyone knows the news by now- WTC and Washinton. My prayers go out to family memebers of the missing as well the family members of the personal that lost there lifes. This is such a coward act and I think the US should take out the highest member taht is involved. I will always rememeber where I was this day as this is much greater than Operation Desert Storm that I was involved in. Keep praying and lets join together and help by giving blood and anything else that may help.

Still love this site, Judy. You do a great job. I do have to comment on the silliness that is going on in the guest book, though. I think that we have much more important things to worry about right now, in light of the recent tragedies; and everyone should get over themselves!

Judy, Your site is such a wonderful gift for those of us who often are away from home for long periods of time, like all winter. I thank you sincerely and warmly for cleaning up the Guestbook of those anonymous creatures who have abused it. The Guestbook is such an important resource for those of us at home or away to be in touch with friends and neighbors, present and former, and through which to often discover where a long-lost friend or neighbor now resides, or simply to express what a joy it is to be able to claim Dexter as home.

Hi there yall. Well it was great to see the Bicentialal events going on while I was up. The fireworks were the best that my home town has ever put on as well the parde was longer than I had inticipated. I was able to see my two boys while I was there. Also wanted to put a great note out for Brewsters Inn in Dexter. The in keepers are the greatest and the place was gorgeous. This was my first stay there and my fiancee and I decided it would not be our last. We look forward to touring and staying at some more B/B's. The weather was great as well while we was up. Well hope to see yall again in a few years as next year is our big wedding day and we will tour Europe for nearly a month.

I enjoyed the Bicentennial Parade and touring the museum last Sat. I know a lot of work went into the week-end celebration, and many of Dexter's citizens, past & present, appreciated it. I was pleased to run into a couple of not-so-old classmates (hi Neil & MaryEllen) and wish I had seen more, though maybe I did and we just didn't recognize each other! We may have hair of gray and a little extra weight on the frame, but when we go back to Dexter we're still young in our hearts.

How come 52 years of living in the State of Maine hasn't given "not much of an out of state fan"
the sense of courtesy and the guts to identify him or her self by including an email address? It doesn't take any courage at all or any sense of pride in one's ideas and convictions to hide in the shadows while throwing brickbats.

We who left were probably never were "Mainers" I for one have always been a Mainiac and always will be. My family moved to Maine in 1797 and I'm proud to be a Mainiac. All I gave up when I left was the right to vote and the responsibility of paying taxes.
I always figured that "Mainer" was a term thought up by a Mainiac "wana-be"

I am wondering if you know of anyone who has a small farm to lease or lease purchase between Winterport and the coast north of Belfast but south of Elsworth? We are anxious to return to Maine and it is really hard to find a place to lease for a while during the transition. We are from the Blue Hill / Brooksville area, have excellent references and experienced in maintaining this type of porperty. We have a 14 year old Quarter horse and Shetland Sheep dogs (4) that we use on the farm as herding dogs.
If you can help, please email me back and I will call.

Well this is a very sad day as I just noticed my best friends sister past away. I remember the days when Karen and Steve lived nearby in the trailor park. How we used to play as children in that trailor. We played ball in the back yard and was seen together always. I am sorry to hear about the death of Karen and she will always be greatly remembered. Again this is a sad day but as well a joyful day for Karen as she is in a much better place and feels no more pain. If anyone sees Steve and his parents do send them hugs and tell them I will be praying for them.

Hello everyone. I want to invite you all to the Kiwanis Auction on Thursday, August 2nd and Friday, August 3rd from 6-9 p.m. at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds on Fairview Avenue in Dover-Foxcroft. You can load up on STUFF and then bring it to Dover-Foxcroft's Homecoming Celebration which will happen all day and into the night on Saturday, August 4th, 2001. There will be a parade, a fishing derby, fireworks, a great bar-b-que and lots more. At the Fairgrounds there will be a craft fair with a new feature this year: "Second Hand Rows." This will be flea market area. This is where you can sell all the good stuff you just bought at the Kiwanis Auction. I'm hoping this flea market turns out to be really successful as it was my idea and I hope it's not a flop. Folks can call the Town Office at 207-564-3318 for details and to get an application. 10'X20' spaces are $20. The Town Office is at 34 East Main Street. Admission to all the Fairgrounds activities is free.
Thanks, Judy, for The Daily Me. It's a great service and a way to build community up here where there's "nothing to do."

Hi..I just wanted to drop by and thank Judy for her efforts in putting together this site. It is so comforting to sit at my computer, click a mouse, and check up on things back home. I still live in Maine, but there is nothing to compare to the tranquility of Dover where I grew up. We don't get home often, but when we do, it is hard to return to southern Maine without experiencing a little homesickness. There's a special place in my heart (and memories) for Dover and Dexter and the people that are still there. God bless each of you.............

I live in the hot and humid state of Florida. Maine to me has always been a dream...a beautifull dream of fresh air and rolling mountians. Wildlife that has an appreciation for humans as humans have the same appreciation for them. A state that knows what Winter looks like. What colors Fall has to offer. A sure sign of Spring, just look at the blubs coming up after the last snow. All the treasures that my state has denied me. And after reading the local paper for the town of Dexter, I now know that when I eventually get to Maine...I will visit Dexter and know it's history after reading the writtings of James Wintle. It's a funny thing to live in the southern most state on the East Atlantic and want to move to the northern most state of the East Atlantic. Thank you Dexter and thank you Maine for just being there for when I am ready! One day I'll be there with you and I shall write music about you. And that is what I could offer Maine; my talent of music. All I ask in return is that you stay just the way you are.

Hey everyone. Just your old pal Seymour, coming to you from the polygamy state of Utah. Yep! I've made the big move! I'm now a resident of Utah. I got tired of living in Maine. Especially that ghost town that glows in the dark. You know where I mean!! But I will return. Don't bother fishing Puffers Pond because I dumped plenty of that contaminated Eastland Mill dirt in Puffers before I left, so the trout don't stand a chance of living now. If I can't have them, no one can. Til then, buh bye......Seymour.

I saw snow fron the first time since 1984 today. Luckily it was only on the hood of a truck that had just come down out of the mountains but it was scary. I was still able to go to work without a jacket or sweater (only because of my think Mainiac blood though, my kids actually put on either a sweatshirt or a windbreaker)
Worst it gets here is scraping frost off the windsheild if you don't park in a garage and have to leave for work before your car's out of the shade.
Sunny Southern California can't compete the the GREENERY of Maine and what they think is a river (the colorado excepted) Maine knows is a brook during drought conditions.
Except for the sunshine Southern California has nothing on Maine.

Hey I read the comment from the "Game Warden" ha ha ha . Who was he trying to kid? Any one who believed ANY of that Story would never qualify to become a REAL game warden, that is in any other state anyway. Most hunters know the laws and would never go on line and admit to ANYTHING illegal would they? But if someone HAD done that I think the statue of limitations is somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 years for most crimes-----I think that took place 17-18 years ago in the story. But just in case "SOMEONE"(but nobody is that gulliable) out there in the great state of Maine thought any of that was true I'm sorry....... Oh by the way have any of the "Wardens", assuming there is more than one captured the man in the red canoe using demolitions to KILL fish???????? Sure would be alot easier to catch an individual like that (hint, he'd be the one in a red canoe, smells like explosives, always has a limit of fish (or over the limit), no pole, no bait or lures, lots of matches or a butane torch, time fuse,DYNAMITE, and makes a HELL Of A LOT OF "NOISE" when he's on the lake. If any of these tips (which i'm sure are all NEW ideas)leads to his capture, feel free to contact me at my E-mail address, and I will tell you where to send the REWARD........
THANKS ALL

Concern Game Warden:: I would like to set the record straight reference comments made by my very dear friend (John Sortman).. The only deer he shot was his own deer which he tagged himself. It was a 130 lb doe and not the 312lb buck he claim he shot but I'am sure you had figured that out already. I do appreciate your concern and the very difficult job you have but you need not concern yourself with me or any friends I bring to the great state of Maine to hunt. My dear friend was right about one thing, I did shoot my first deer that year and it's the only deer I've taken in Maine.. We are looking forward to our return to the beautiful wilderness of Maine this fall as I still consider Dexter my home. Again, I appreciate the job you do, be safe and God bless. Greg Vigue

While stationed at Fort Devens Mass.in 83-91, I met an individual who was from Dexter Maine and he invited me to go deer hunting there. We talked about this for several months before I decided to take him up on his offer. After telling me of all the deer, countryside, the people, the weather, and his 15 years of hunting experience in the wilderness of the great state of Maine we departed....It wasn't until we crossed the N.H. border, heading to my great adventure in Maine, did I think to ask "just how many deer have you shot" at which he replied "NONE YET"......... (and I might add at this time he ended another season (#16)without bagging a deer) I almost fell out of the car but "I" was doing the driving----------Well he was right about the people, countryside, the weather and I bagged a 12 point,312lb BUCK {as I remember it) I was later informed it was the biggest of the year.........Well it's been 10 years since we retired from the military and we still keep in touch and seems we are planning another trip to the great state of Maine this fall. By the way I did shoot a deer for him the following season and let him claim it (a 96lb doe)he was so proud of that monster, by the time we got home it had grown to a 1100lb moose. Well Greg Vigue I hope you get to read this and I hope it brings back some of the best times of your life as it does mine. Hope to get there soon.

Hi Judy,
I think your picture today must be taken just after one of those super frost heaves that we have in the spring. Are you being optomistic? Great job and KUTGW! Julie

If anyone has any information re: dates for the upcoming class reunions this summer, please contact me. My brother, Joe, and I are hoping that the class of '71 and the class of 76 will be planned on the same week-end so that we can visit each other as well as attend our reunions. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I would just like to say for many years I drove to the Dexter area and loved it every time I made the trip.In 97 I packed my things and my 2 daughters and moved to Harmony(along with the great ice storm).I met alot of nice people and made alot of friends.Unable to make it I had to move back to where I left.I just wanted to say I miss the the wonderful people I met,and the "peace and quiet",also the beautiful area! I cant wait to make the trip up again.Have a great year folks!8o)

And for those of you who are the people who have said nasty things about me since I have moved, Have a nice day!!! Really!!!! Life if grand!!!!

I just wanted to say hello to everyone in Sangerville and Dover-foxcroft, where I grew up. I would love to hear from any of my old classmates and friends from home. I am now living in England and enjoying life. Emma and I will be visiting Maine the first week in April 2001.
Happy New Year to all.
